“Active Hope involves identifying the outcomes we hope for and then playing an active role in bringing them about. We can rise to the occasion with wisdom, courage, and care or we can shrink from the challenge…. Can we train ourselves to become more courageous, inspired, and connected?“  –

Active Hope – How to Face the Mess We’re in without Going Crazy by Joanna Macy and Chris Johnstone

Using the book  Active Hope we will come together across the generations to find ways to step into ourselves and our interconnection to each other and the living systems of Earth.  We can find courage, strength and guidance from each other and from Earth that will assist us in our journey to co-create a just and thriving planet for all.

The webinars are live and interactive. During the webinar there will be whole group discussions as well as meetings in pairs and small groups for Work That Reconnects practices.

In addition to the live webinars there are readings from Active Hope and a weekly check in / practice session with your course buddy.

Please read the Introduction and Chapters 1 & 2 of Active Hope before the first webinar. For more information and to purchase the book: New World Library or 100Fires.com

Reading Schedule:

Session 1 – Introduction plus Chapters 1 & 2 –

What are the stories of our time?  To build the future we want for our children , our grandchildren, and the future generations of all species we need to change the stories we tell ourselves as a society and as individuals.  Introduction to the Spiral of the Work That Reconnects a key to transformational learning.

Session 2 – Chapter 3 on Coming from Gratitude –

Can we find the gratitude for being alive on this beautiful earth particularly at this time of uncertainty and social and environmental upheaval?  There is power in gratitude.

Session 3 – Chapter 4 on Honoring our Pain for the World.

As we face the possible extinction of life as we know it our love of life earth, and humans deepens.  By Honoring our grief, rage, fear, and despair both personal and planetary we open our hearts to our deep inter-connectedness and our passion for justice and then we can heed the call to act on behalf of life?

Session 4 – Chapters 5, 6, 7 & 8 on Seeing With New Eyes –

We must come out of the illusion of separation and see with New / Ancient Eyes that we are deeply interconnected with all Earth systems, with all humans and indeed the whole Universe.  The current Euro-centric world view and economic system ( Business as Usual ) is killing the planet so we must shift to New Structures and world views that are in alignment with living systems.

Session 5 – Chapters 9 & 10, Going Forth pt 1 –

We each have important roles to play in creating a sustainable and thriving planet for all. What is the vision of the future that is calling to you and what roles will you play to make it a reality. How do we make space for our imaginations, creativity, and true power to emerge. What are the steps to make our visions happen?

Session 6 – Chapters 11, 12 & 13 on Going Forth –

How do we live? Who do we engage with? What choices can we make that will support a life sustaining society?  How do we develop the gifts that are ours as Youngers, Olders or Elders that are so needed in the world at this time?  How can we go hand in hand with each other to build the more beautiful world we know is possible?

The concepts and philosophy introduced will lay the foundation for further explorations in the Multi-Generational Learning for Life Programs of the Transformative Learning Foundation.
