Men in the Work That Reconnects

Apr 16 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm PDT

One of the most powerful aspects of the WTR is that it helps participants tune into and express the emotions we feel about the world. Being raised in societies that condition us to suppress our emotions causes a disconnect with the natural world, our communities and ourselves. The WTR helps us mend those disconnections by creating compassionate community space to share authentically and empowering us with tools and perspectives for connected living.

People who are raised as boys and men in our modern patriarchal society are typically trained to repress their emotions in an even more extreme way. This leaves them with a wide range of social and emotional barriers that can prevent them from becoming involved in the WTR or recognizing its value in their lives. As we strive to contribute to the Great Turning and dismantle systems of separation, working together across gender identities is a powerful and beautiful practice that is healing for all participants.

In 2020 Vincent Brown wrote a dissertation for his PhD program in Transformative Studies with a focus in Consciousness Studies at California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS) entitled, What Benefits do Men Experience through the Work That Reconnects? A Phenomenological Inquiry (link to the PDF here)Vincent’s article, Men in the Work That Reconnects, which furthers this inquiry, will be featured in the latest issue of the Deep Times Journal (which will be released next week).

Join Vincent Brown and Kevin Lay as they share insights from this inquiry as well as their personal journey as decades-long practitioners of the Work and discuss the powerful benefits they’ve experienced and observed for men who participate in the WTR.

Participants of all gender identities are welcomed to join us for this webinar.

During the event Vincent and Kevin will share some upcoming opportunities for male-identifying participants to engage in deeper practices of the WTR.

Vincent Brown is an environmental specialist focusing on watershed health and multiple species habitat regeneration. He has been involved in the Work That Reconnects since 2003 and facilitating the Work since 2012. Vincent has a master’s degree in Transformative Leadership, and a doctorate in Transformative Studies, with a focus in consciousness studies, from the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, California. His dissertation is entitled, What Benefits Do Men Experience Through the Work That Reconnects? A Phenomenological Inquiry, integrating leadership studies, consciousness studies, spirituality, psychology, masculinity studies, environmental studies, neuroscience, feminism, critical scholarship, phenomenology, and other philosophical frameworks.

Kevin Lay has flourished in the last five years as a composer and Buddhist Vajrayana practitioner. He also loves playing guitar, writing poetry, and hiking. He has studied with Joanna Macy since the early 90’s when he was a software engineer and has facilitated the Work That Reconnects since 2008. Kevin is also certified to teach Deep Listening as taught by Pauline Oliveros. In the near future he would like to present a WTR Cafe and session which explores a combination of WTR and Deep Listening.
