Post-election Mini-Spiral Facilitator Training
Oct 11, 2020 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm EDT
One event on Oct 13, 2020 at 8:00 pm
The Work That Reconnects will be one of the vital and COVID-safe ways that we can show up for our communities, nation(s), and the world near the end of a tumultuous calendar year. With our powers combined we can offer numerous spaces for strangers to come together to process the impact of the election and the fallout from it using the WTR as a modality to do so.
Sarah Nahar and Mordechai Liebling are offering an opportunity for you to bring your skills in facilitating the WTR to assist people in processing post-election by facilitating a 2-hour online min-spiral. To participate as a facilitator in this series of events, register below for one of the facilitator trainings. For more information please contact Sarah at [email protected]
This post-election offering was inspired by two streams: one is inspired by the Evolving Edge Anti-Oppression Resource Group to see this as an opportunity to facilitate in such a way that explicitly connects the struggle of the people and the struggle of the earth, and the second was the Ghost Ranch gathering after the 2016 election, when Joanna invited people to do an exercise that centered on the questions, “What are your gifts from your tradition, lineage, teachers, family that have prepared you for this time?” And “What are your gifts from the earth that have prepared you for this time?”
We are inviting you to use your WTR facilitation skills to assist people as they process the US election. We humbly recognize that this is a US-centric call at the moment, and are even humbler still to recognize that what goes on in the US impacts the rest of the world. The goal of these mini-spirals are not to sideline what is happening on the social justice scene in light of the climate crisis scene, rather they are invitations to political ecology–a willingness to go right through the compression point of the election to illuminate how people are relating to each other in the living body of earth. As facilitators we will help people to name, grieve, perceive, and breathe these connections with an aim of returning participants more refreshed and grounded to be courageous in the face of oppression in their daily lives.
Since this will be online, the maximum time a group can likely sustain quality attention will be two hours. This abbreviation is why we call them mini-spirals. They are also mini because we will limit group size to 25 (one Zoom screen). Facilitators will move through the stages a bit quicker than usual…however we hope this experience will give people a taste of an engaged way to grieve together with others at this moment of righteous rage.
This will likely be “groups of strangers talking together.” There will be a lot of strong emotions in the Zoom room, no matter what. It would be hard to accomplish well by yourself.
This is why Mordechai and Sarah are here to support you through this process. It will begin with a facilitator training and capacity-building, include a skeleton script for you to use, potentially some day-of-event support and end with an evaluation of what it was like to offer emergency-WTR in these circumstances.
