THE WORK THAT RECONNECTS:

Finding Our Power in a time of Global Crisis

June 1st 2-5:30pm

@ NDG Sports Centre & Parc Benny

A workshop for anyone who is worried about the state of the world.

I was 14 when I first started to understand more about the state of the world. Living in a large urban centre, I couldn’t look anywhere without seeing the compulsive environmental destruction and pervasive social injustice that characterize our society. I fell into despair, and felt extremely alone. I was motivated to take action — and I eventually did — but I was perplexed about how those around me could be aware of the same things but choose to stay on the sidelines. How could people have the same information I had, but not feel moved to act?

I became curious about inner processes of transformation. I studied psychology and meditation. But the link to action — how to support others to find their place in the healing of our world — still eluded me. In 2002, I met Joanna Macy, and it was clear that the Work that Reconnects was the piece I had been missing.

WHAT IS THE WORK THAT RECONNECTS?
The central insight of the Work that Reconnects is that the very emotions we are inclined to avoid when we think about the state of the world — feelings like despair, anger, grief and fear —contain within themselves a wellspring of power and connection. The catch? We can’t do this alone. The empowerment we need to face the mess we’re in and find a way forward arises when we connect with these feelings together.

THE WORK THAT RECONNECTS helps awaken us to our essential belonging with each other and with all of life. No matter how much we have messed up as a species, we still belong to planet Earth. And in order to do that, the Work that Reconnects also offers an experiential collective process that facilitates this insight on a visceral level — so we know this first hand, not just intellectually. It’s also fun, playful, moving, sometimes painful and liberating! And this kind of waking up can free us to take action for our world, as well as take care of ourselves and each other. While capitalism and colonialism divorce us from ourselves, our earth and each other, the Work that Reconnects has the power to bring us “back to life” — it awakens our creativity, power, solidarity and motivation to take action for our world.

WHO IS THIS WORK FOR?
This work is for anyone who is worried about the state of our world, but feeling stuck about what to do about it. It’s also for activists who have been at it for a long time, but are feeling depleted or burnt out. Basically, if you’re a human alive on planet Earth right now, you’re welcome to join this workshop!

LANGUAGE: This workshop will be primarily offered in English. Francophones are welcome to participate in French, and translation will be offered as needed.

FACILITATOR: Rebekah Hart is a licensed psychotherapist, couple and family therapist, and drama therapist who makes her home in unceded Algonquin territory, also known as the Laurentians region of Quebec. As a longtime Work that Reconnects facilitator and student of Joanna Macy, she has over 23 years of experience facilitating groups that help people work with feelings like eco-anxiety and other emotions that arise in relation to the state of the world. Rebekah is also an active member of the Climate Psychology Alliance of North America, where she acts as a Quebec Regional Coordinator. The values underlying her work are rooted in a long-term dedication to social and environmental justice, her belief in creativity as a healing force, and her love and respect for the natural world.

CONTRIBUTION: $50 – 75$ or pay what you can. This workshop is offered in the spirit of the solidarity economy, and the Buddhist practice of “dana” or generosity. If the sliding scale is inaccessible to you, please feel free to pay what you can.

ACCESSIBILITY: The NDG Sports Centre is wheelchair accessible. To increase accessibility to immunocompromised and covid-cautious community members, this is a “mask-friendly” event. While masks are not required, mask-wearers are warmly welcomed. HEPA air purifiers will be present in the space and weather permitting, much of the workshop will take place outdoors. If you have additional accessibility needs, please do not hesitate to let us know.
