Whale Songs for the Ancestors in Deep Time: a monthly online gathering in the WTR

Event Overview

Before the alphabet, song was Earth’s language. Whales have been singing longer than we have had words.

We have been singing for longer than we have had words. 

Whale songs travel thousands of miles through ocean waters, carrying information we are only beginning to understand — and perhaps something older than information: remembrance. Whales are our mammalian ancestors who crawled out of the ocean, but remembered, and returned to the ocean. In a time of fire, urgency, and circuits — what does it mean to be led back into the water? 

A word about your facilitator, 張家敏 Jessica Cheung (Murray): among the Tanka people of the South China Sea — the saltwater people, the boat-dwelling fisherfolk who knew the ocean as home and source — song moved between humans and the more-than-human world as call and response. A phrase offered into the water. Something sung back. Not an echo, but an answer. This practice lives in the ancestral body of your facilitator from the Chinese diaspora — and it co-emerged with whales communicating across vast oceanic distances.

Drawing on the practices of the Work That Reconnects, we move together through a simple, embodied arc:

• Arriving together into the ecological self
• Somatic grounding that orients to water, and invites fluidity and buoyancy into our bodies
• A deeper check-in from our fuller, landed selves
• A shared practice of whale song — call and response across deep time and deep ecology
• A closing sharing circle

No preparation or prior experience with WTR is needed. Come as you are. This is a space to be held, to be unwieldy and ungovernable, to grieve, to remember, and to feel — even briefly — the unbroken thread of life that runs through us.
