Joanna Macy, beloved root teacher of the Work That Reconnects,
passed away at her home on July 19, 2025 surrounded by family and friends.
Celebration of Life for Joanna Macy
The Work That Reconnects Network offered two gatherings on Tuesday, August 5, 2025 to honour this profound transition with a global, online connection space. It was a celebration of life that brought together the global Work That Reconnects community, and all others who felt called to join. It was a time to mourn, remember, and celebrate together to bring comfort, connection, and meaning to all who gathered.
Joanna Rogers Macy leaves a legacy that will long continue to inform and energize both the work of healing the world from the frenzy of industrialized capitalism, and the complementary movements to come home to the true nature of our being. For, as she would say, we are embedded in the web of life.
From the late 1970’s, in her early mid-life on, Joanna devoted much of her energy to the development and dissemination of the body of work that became known as the Work That Reconnects. Working with colleagues throughout the world, and with the steady support of her husband Fran Macy, this work was enriched by her many related passions: the Sarvodaya movement for peace in Sri Lanka, whose efforts she and Fran ardently supported; the cultivation and connection with her teachers in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, from which root concepts of the Work That Reconnects arose; and her work with nuclear guardianship, for she felt in her bones the call of the future beings to muster all of our wits for the protection of the web of life.
At the height of the “cold war” in the 1970s, after her own awakening to the dangers of nuclear power in particular, Joanna made a discovery: when a group of concerned people spoke to each other their fears, their terror, and even their despair, a spirit of connection arose in the group, and a clarity of focus and release of energy fueled strategic planning and action. Others were making this same discovery (psychologist Chellis Glendinning in particular was an early collaborator). The resulting “despair work,” with its “despair and empowerment workshops,” countervailed the numbing of terror and overwhelm, and the forces of the military/industrial growth culture which would have us live out our lives entirely within its story of fear and domination.
Joanna was a great storyteller. She had us in the palm of her hand, and we knew ourselves as our larger selves when she told of the Shambhala Warriors (surely we were meant to be warriors too; indeed, surely we had been secret warriors all along, preparing for our turns in the halls of power).
She was also a great collaborator – the Elm Dance, the Truth Mandala, the Council of All Beings all grew out of deeply collaborative relationships.
Joanna had a special connection with young people, whose passion, creativity and freedom of expression fueled her own inspiration and stamina.
Joanna loved to have a good time. Playfulness and its twin, imagination, infuse the Work That Reconnects. She poured her passion into the work, and as a result her many collaborator-friends formed among themselves a vibrant network of love.
She leaves us a toolkit – the Spiral of the Work That Reconnects and the fundamental framing and practices and stories that make the body of work what it is. The practices and stories keep evolving and changing, responding to one moment and helping to create the next in this work of the Great Turning.
For the many thousands of us who carry on and continue to develop the Work That Reconnects – this gift of the shared journey from despair to connection, empowerment, and action – Joanna Macy leaves us her particular inspiration of a robust fearlessness, and perseverance fueled by love.

Joanna dedicated her life to nurturing the Work That Reconnects as a gift to the world. If you feel moved to help the WTR Network continue giving that gift and carrying on her legacy, you’re invited to make a donation in her honor.
One of the projects we’ll fund with your contributions is the production of an audiobook of Joanna’s memoir Widening Circles, narrated by Leilani Navar and published by New Society Publishers

Joanna,
It is not everyone’s privilege to walk with sages and wise elders. I consider it an honor to have met you. Your contribution to my life has been profound on many levels.
It was you who gave me hope and provided me with the tools and community I needed. I am the change I wish to see in humanity.
I am grateful for your blessings in my life and for marrying Simon and me.
The Shambhala warrior in me has continuously prayed for your transition throughout my Buddhist practice, and I will continue to do so.
With love and gratitude,
Cata

What a beautiful soul to have graced our beloved Earth! Clarity, wit and wisdom in equal measure. Love and blessings for all her extended family, and for all of the global community who will hold her in our collective heart.

I’m new to the Network and feel somehow Joanna called me into her mandala earlier this year, answering my anguished call for loving guidance and community. I almost cannot grasp how vast she is, and ever vaster now. One with the sky and the clear light, resting in perfect wisdom and compassion. I offer thanks for all she has co-created and the possibilities she has seeded in the collective. Tender condolences to her family and all who love her.
-
You have shown us how peace works, me and my whole family, so that life on and with our beloved mother earth is worthwhile and you go ahead of us over the rainbow bridge to meet Fran and all the others who have gone before you. A piece of my heart goes with you, beloved Joanna-akka, may all beings be happy.

Let this darkness be a bell tower, and you the bell❤️
-
Dear Joanna,
Thank you.
Thank you for your courage, your clarity, your unwavering love for this Earth and all its beings. Through your words, your work, and your presence, you reminded us that grief is not weakness—it is a measure of our love. You gave us tools to stand in the face of despair without turning away. You taught us how to transform pain into purpose.
You showed us that hope is not something we feel—it’s something we do. And you lived that hope every day, fiercely and gently, until your last breath.
Though you are no longer in this world in body, your spirit moves through all who were touched by your teachings. In the forests that still stand, in the hands that plant seeds, in the tears of those who choose to stay awake—there you are.
May your journey onward be peaceful. May we carry your legacy with care, and may we never forget the work that reconnects us.
With love, sorrow, and deep gratitude,
Dr. Ling Yue -
Your clarity, wisdom, passion and embodiment of love-in-action leave a legacy for the world which we will continue to draw on for generations to come.

It was the winter of 2015-16, and I was holed up at a friends house in Old Colorado City, writing a book on climate grief inspired by my interactions with Joanna while studying at CIIS, serving at Zen Hospice, and living in Berkeley. They were dedicating the Joanna Macy Center there in Boulder, and Joanna had asked if David Loy and I could take her out to some of her favorite watering holes afterwards! Needless to say, I was more than a little starstruck going out with these two luminaries. But they were so gracious, both so humble, and we had a lovely night of deep conversation about Buddhism, which we all shared, and of course the desperate state of the world. I left Joanna with a galley copy of my book, which of course she read cover-to-cover on the plane ride home the next day! The woman lit up every room she ever entered, and was indefatigable in her service to Mother Earth. What a full and meaningful life she lived! As someone who has studied death and dying from both a hospice and Buddhist perspective, I can let you in on a little secret: people like Joanna don’t bother with the bardo – they recognize the clear light nature of their mind as soon as they depart from their body, merge with the Mother Light (just like she merged during her life with Mother Earth), and go directly to a pure land, a cognitive sphere created by a buddha’s mind, where they get the precise teachings they will need to be of even more benefit in their next incarnation. Gaia still has great need of her wisdom and grace, her oceanic love, and I have even more hope for the future knowing she’ll be back at it before too long!

Grounding in gratitude, honoring our pain….Thank you, dear Joanna, for all you have given. You’ve been a great support to me these years through your books and films you left. You’ve made me see with new eyes. And from now on… we will all Go forth and spread all the helping insights and questions you and your friends shared with us (special thanks to Chris Johnston ). Yesterday I meditated and cried for you on my Gaia spot in the forest… (a spot I adopted through the homework of The work that reconnects). I felt her peace. I wish all her beloved a warm gathering and farewell. It is only her body, voice and presence that left us. Her love and wisdom stay.

Thank You Joanna for all that you have gifted us through your generous sharing of How to Live… and Die… with Love and Care for All Beings on this Beautiful Earth.
Your Courage, Light and Legacy will continue to enrich us all.
Love & Blessings to All whose lives you touched… and those who have yet to feel the Clarity and Deep Truth of your teachings. xxx -
Joanna, always widening circles, now widening the ultimate circle…
Gratitude, mourning, seeing anew, and: acting as love, having you Shambala Warrior within me, standing on your shoulders in this Great Turning -
You are such a beautiful being Joanna. Blessings for your loved ones who have held you these last weeks and allowed us to continue to be touched by you and your work.
With gratitude leading the way, honoring our pain, continuing to see with new eyes, and going forth… go forth in peace. You are loved. -
Joanna’s strong presence through the last of her weeks has once again gifted us with great wisdom — and her love of Life. I pray that her beautiful presence will continue to be felt through her teachings and now through all of us. It is up to us to continue her legacy, sharing her teachings, and being strong and dedicated Shambhala warriors. What an amazing gift of life!
-
Joanna’s work was introduced to me by a friend when I had fallen into despair after learning more about the climate crisis. My friend suggested I read “Active Hope” and I began, thinking that like most books, I would probably have to wait to the last chapter to get to the “hope” part. Nope. It poured over me like a waterfall just after reading the Introduction!!! Her framing of our time as Business as Usual, The Unraveling, and The Great Turning were transformative and have continued to give me purpose and joy in moments of despair. Thank you, Joanna, for not wasting your one wild and precious life!
-
the way you taught us to grieve and embrace at once, we know how to do now, loving you in your parting, and in what knows no parting. Tears of both kinds.

Blessed to have experienced The Work That Reconnects.

Much gratitude Joanna. I am one of the many thousands who have benefitted from the trees and fruit you planted, who never met you face to face. What gifts and resources you gave to us that we partake of and share on our journeys. Thank you.

You are such a beautiful and great soul – a Mahatma. Thanks for walking your path on Earth in such a compassionate way regardless of outer circumstances. Thanks for opening our hearts to feel the suffering of the world to find the love beyond. May your work flourish and touch even more people. Until we meet again …
-
thank you Joanna, for your wisdom and teachings. I encountered them at a pivotal moment and they have been foundational in my life – helping me to accept my grief and despair about ecological and climate collapse as completely natural and shared by many others, even if so many I see on a day to day basis seem stuck in ‘business as usual.’ What a gift you gave me, and so many others – all over the world. You were a true shambala warrior for these troubling times.
-
It seems somewhat odd to feel so connected to someone I’ve never met in person, but Joanna’s way with words, her presence, and aliveness clearly speak in a language that transcends the need for in person encounter. There’s solace to be found in knowing this connection will still be available to all those yet to encounter her.
Because of Joanna’s life and work, I’m a little more at home with living my life in widening circles…I may complete this last one, but I give myself to it.
With grief and gratitude,
Paul -
Meant to say, “I may NOT complete this last one, but I give myself to it.”

our week with you in retreat shall always serve to renew my strength, Joanna.

Tears flow across my face as I type, feeling the joyful urgency of connecting, reconnecting, belonging to the great warrior tribe and my sacred initiation, which I’d forgotten, remembered, forgotten again and remembered again over and over thru’ this life, in this body. Now, remembering again I re–commit to the task at hand. I give thanks to each one of you, with whom I am so eternally grateful and connected. Such is this tearful prayer offered in honor and tribute to Joanna Macy and to the work, –– The Work that Reconnects, that she invited us into and personified. Blessed Be🙏

Dear relatives, friends, co-workers,
I wish all people close to Joanna strength these days.
A few years ago I had the honor to witness Joanna in The Great Turning Experiment. Her presence and wisdom will live on through all people inspired by her.
I bow for her and thank her. May she rest in peace and may her soul be free.

Joanna was, and will continue to be an Inner Mentor for me, and I’m sure I will continue to be a conduit for the love and joy as I embrace all that I have, and am still, learning from her. Knowing how well she was cared for in her death journey and how peacefully her final days were, is a great tribute to how she lived her life. What do we do now, without her? Express our gratitude for her, honor the pain that she and we all feel at this time in our nation, see the beauty and the pain with new/ancient eyes, and of course, Go Forth- with compassion and wisdom, forgiving everyone everything!
-
Feeling full of gratitude for the compassion and wisdom Joanna shared with the world. Experiencing the ‘work that reconnects’ in a workshop led by Joanna in 2015 in Rowe, MA opened up a world of hope for me. Thank you Joanna.
-
Blessings and yet more blessings on you, on your work, on the widening circle.
-
Gracious lady. A life well lived in service of big love
-
While so saddened by Joanna’s transition, we celebrate her remarkable life and know that her presence and gifts will be felt in all directions. She will continue to inspire and give us Active Hope through her memories and her incredible legacy. As she often said, these are the times when we are most needed. Deep Bows, Sensei Joanna

A deeply authentic humanitarian and luminary in many arenas of creativity and overall well being. Joanna Macy lived a life of abundance that she bestowed upon all those who were fortunate to know her.
May her memory be for a blessing. -
Thank you, Joanna, for directing me to a path leading to awareness and connection. Your smile endures in my mind.
-
Thank you Joanna for sharing your light and your love of life. Your inspired workshops, guiding in mind, body and spirit, are touchstones in my life. Pioneering education for resilience. Publicly naming the moral injury and distress that our society inflicts and sharing with others was so deeply healing.
You reminded us that we are all part of life’s multi-generational story and with our imaginations, we can tap into that strength and wisdom. You’ve guided my work in the Jewish community, inspiring my story creation of a Rabbi’s Theology of Weeping from the Warsaw Ghetto, as well as new public grief rituals and laments. I am a grief counselor today because you were who you were. Thank you, thank you, thank you for following your heart (and sharing your love of poetry).
May your soul continue to be a blessing for those who remember you. With love and reverence.
-
Joanna was a amazing light and leader in our world! Her compassion and deep deep understanding of our connectedness was such an inspiration to me. Her WTR made a profound difference in my life and I felt so honored to work with at the Institute for Deep ecology. Many blessing to her on her passage and many blessings to her family and dear ones. She inspired so much creativity in me.
-
So much gratitude for the widening circles of wisdom and compassion that continue to radiate from Joanna’s presence on Earth. How lucky we are to have been alive on Earth along with such a great bodhisattva. My heart is forever widened and deepened by Joanna. What grief to lose her physical presence. And so much gratitude to be one of so many carrying her brilliant legacy onward.
Many thanks to the network team for making this beautiful page for the community. 🙏

A lover of earth. A life well lived. Fly free with blessings.

Thank you dear Joanna Macy, outstanding & deeply influential teacher & mentor. You embodied well the 2 weapons of the Shambhala Warrior – wisdom & compassion. Your magnificent Work That Reconnects continues to ripple out into the world in widening circles. We mourn your passing while carrying on this life-affirming Work.
-
There are no words to pay sufficient tribute to this luminous being! Her love for the whole Earth Community was legendary and will endure.
She has ignited so many seeds of transformation that her work will blossom in the years to come.
With a deep bow of gratitude, Mary Evelyn Tucker -
Dear Joanna, thank you for teaching me that this is the best time to be alive on this beloved planet. Thank you for entrusting this work to so many incredible people who have had their hearts pierced by the radical presence you taught. Thank you for showing me that fear and courage go hand in hand. I feel your enormous, Earth-sized presence and an eternal gratitude for having been touched by your passion and wisdom!

In 1996-2000, I studied and worked with Joanna as part of my doctoral dissertation at the Graduate Theological Union that centered around her use of human imagination in her workshops around Deep Ecology. I attended Deep Ecology trainings up at Whidbey Island put on by the Institute for Deep Ecology, and studied closely her in-person work, that was collected in her books co-written with Molly Brown, culminating in the Work that Reconnects. Working with her made a deep impression upon me in my own engaged spiritual life in ways that I am still exploring. At my dissertation defense she so graciously thanked me for my dissertation because she said it helped clarify for her how she utilized the human imagination in engaging people in her workshops. I would like to make that dissertation available to everyone in The Work that Reconnects network if it could prove helpful and insightful. It is titled “Performance, Religious Imagination, and the Play of the Land in the Study of Deep Ecology and Its Practices,” and is found at https://www.conspiritu.org/writing.html. I am deeply grateful to the life and work of Joanna Macy, and how that work will continue in the lives of all who knew her. May the world be transformed by each of us Shambhala Warriors.

Grateful for the Hope
Hollow sadness of loss
The turning continues
Around again -
such a wonderful blessed , generous and great woman. i never had the opportunity to be with her, and yet – simply to know, that she has been on this planet and was giving real light, understanding and empathy influenced me so strong!
thank you, joanna -
May Big Mama who brought you into existence now receive you back into Her body again, Joanna. Thank you for being!

Training with Joanna change my life. I’ve always preferred ‘Despair and Empowerment’ as a title for this work over the names adopted later as I think it faces the facts. Despair is an appropriate response to what’s happening our world and the workshops empower us to become ‘effective agents of change in a world in crisis’.
A significant chuck of my work has been related to what I learnt from Joanna. I’ve written and performed poetry based on her ideas. I’ve run workshops that people have told me they’ve found life-changing. My entire world view is influenced by her teachings.
But most of all, Joanna gave me the tools to survive being me. The understanding that ‘The heart that breaks can contain the world’ has enabled me to recognise that being broken-hearted is a strength not the weakness I sometimes experience it as being. -
My path through life would have been less meaningful without the insights you helped grow in me. In your presence I felt in conversation with Universe embodied, a great benevolence. Your teachings will be carried as a bundle of sanity into the future, and are already consoling so many in these times of letting go, to let come. In deep love and eternal gratitude.
-
have so much deep respect for her dedication and willing to fully follow this wonderful purpose in bringing love and understanding into this world. AND i’m really gratefull for her endouring passion to approach grief and other challenging feelings as a steady part of our lives.
In deep Gratitude for her work and living

I came to know Joanna through my friend and mentor Michael Dowd. As a result, I read her books and took her online Active Hope course. Since then I have added Active Hope to my daily life focusing on loving resilience. Her wisdom will resonate with me forever! I look forward to our spirits coming together again when it’s my time to cross over. Thank you Joanna, PROST!

Even in death, Joanna is a beacon of life! I feel blessed to have found the Work That Reconnects while she was still actively teaching. She is a gift and inspriation to the world. Thank you for existing Joanna Macy!
-
Thank you, Joanna, for your contributions to humanity. Your teachings will only grow in importance as the years go on, and they will live on in the countless people you have influenced, who will carry it forward. I can only imagine how fascinating it will be for you to observe how this all unfolds from the other side.

POEM – mashup using Joanna’s own words: How close can you get to the fire? Be with discomfort. Of world coming apart. Turn away? Nothing to be done? Reluctance to feel? Break free! Listen to: Youth. Indigenous. Aboriginal. Sacred feminine. Heart. Step out of self. Judging self. Suit of armor. No blame. Find freedom in humility. Life depends on it. Focus on this moment. No time for optimistic hope. Nor vision of compelling future. No regrets. The irrelevance of hopelessness. No pep talk. No false optimism. No answers. Face consequences. With courageous curiosity. That’s all that’s needed. Source of gratitude. Depth of joy. Reveling in the unknown.
You are the one. Hear the voice inside. Intellectually naked. Emotionally available. Gaia consciousness speaks there. Grow yourself in widening circles. Liberated from ego. Beautiful life. Open to ancient-ones dreams. Rediscover love in this exquisite moment. Fall in love with what is. No misplaced fears. In this moment of realization. What can a human be at this time? Recognize the truth of what’s happening. Take place in healing. Great transition. Great turning. Sweet mother. Vision of commitment. Motivation. Persevering. Inspiration. Trust. Determination to serve all beings. Be the flame in your heart. In this space without a map.
On shifting ground. Old habits and previous expectations no longer apply. We are cut loose. In liminal space. Between worlds. Transformation. Mirror of wisdom. Reflect on everything that is. Take it in. Do not look away, avert gaze, turn aside. Bring radical attention and total acceptance. To this gap between worlds. Nothing can be sweeter than to be with our mother. In this time. Discover love all over again. This is the most exquisite moment. Fall in love with that! Magnificent people and place. What can a human be at this time? Positive disintegration of self.
Consequences. Coming upon us fast. Prioritize collective wellbeing. Discover new solidarity. Move beyond inheritance. In this time of reckoning. This place where the unknown and inconceivable happen. Gratitude from ground up. Feel feet on Earth. On living planet. You know what keeps you going. Be with great mother. With each other. With self. Reliant. Where else would you want to be? Honoring pain, grief, fear, dread, anger, outrage. OH! That feels good to express!
Still, words are limited in the great unknown. So link loving arms. Glance in rear view mirror. See who you no longer are. Meditate on not shutting down. Let grief stretch you and open you to the power of owning your sorrow. Connect to all who suffer in this assault on life. With animals and birds. With stones of ancient land. We are one generation through thousands of years. Mothers and fathers shaped by futures and children to come. We are endlessly offered into life. Walking the immensity of open heart. All time is ours.
We are a Council of all beings. Finding voices of other beings. Let them speak through you. Step out of shoes too tight. Step out of human. Link to generations future and past. Listen. Find symbols, ceremonies, rituals, tantric signs. In that emptiness from which newness arises. Find grief and rage. Grieve what you love. Find courage in fear. Reach out. Outrage and anger equate passion for justice.
What a beautiful calling. To be lover of world. Who would want to be anywhere else. At this precious moment. Cry out together. Listen to boundless heart. Something strong is pouring through you. You are the rainforest protecting herself. Gaia pouring through you. With roots to the beginnings of time. Cosmos. Universe.
Past and future – bent into endless circles that enclose you. But With broken connections. Between past and future. Be with future-ones. Witness to past-ones. In communities of practice across webs of time. Deep time. Look where compassion takes you. Imagine future one’s talking to you. In all-species, time-bending communities of practice. Practices of mind, body, and spirit. A moment of discovery of the immensity of your true nature. Open to understanding all life.
She spoke to the sky. She wanted them to see us. Please see us. What we have done. To see what happens to a planet when we haven’t learned how to love each other. This would make it so much easier to bear. If we could all be. Lovers reaching for a wider grasp of life. A flame in the heart. Don’t let the flame go out. Its burning bright. In you. I can feel it. Love through collapse.
Be with future & past generations in deep time. Role playing. Moral imagination. Go into the future and start talking. Feel something move in your psyche. Every being that has ever lived is present right now, inside you. Rescued by deep time. Rescued by the future. Take evolutionary steps into relationship. To energize the emerging. You are the great turning.
World as lover. World as self. Fearless self. World coming toward you. Meet and be met. Open hearts shape it. Open minds behold it. Be present enough to be fully useful. While our species is destroying the world. Eyes ears heart open. Unblocked feedback loops. See our world and touch it. To be involved with its healing. Our healing. Joyous broken heart. Not afraid of suffering. That’s what the time calls for. The time we are living is extraordinary. Can you believe it? Guided by stories. The secret to our power lies there. In the end of this third revolution. This new beginning. We are born into epochal transition. A new revolution of heart. Guided by Indigenous voices. -
It was my experience, before meeting you all: While planting trees and recycling and beautifying was derided by some as not “classical yoga” by those in charge of a previous school I was part of founding, before worldwide fame., and, current “defame.”
No yoga and nature was scheduled, nothing was recycled.
Now it is touted they do that, but it is a bit late?Reading and seeing this video and story,
HOW COMFORTING TO BE HOME, and have arrived with CFF and take Joanna Macy into the flowergarden of peace in my heart.
And into my hands to work at home always.Deepest condolences,
Sincerely, M. Andre -
Thank you. Holding all in my heart and in the light.

To the children and grandchildren of Joanna Macy,
On behalf of the Buddhist Union of the Netherlands, we extend our heartfelt condolences on the passing of your beloved mother and grandmother, Joanna Macy.
With deep reverence, gratitude, and loving-kindness (metta), we bow to her life. A life lived with unwavering compassion, wisdom, and courage. Joanna touched countless hearts around the world, including in the Netherlands. Her teachings and presence continue to ripple through our sanghas and our lives.
Joanna’s vision of a life-sustaining society, grounded in interbeing and ecological consciousness, has inspired a generation of Dharma practitioners, activists, scientists, and ordinary citizens to act with clarity and love in the face of suffering. Her articulation of The Work That Reconnects gave us a path to transform pain into empowered engagement. She taught us that our grief for the world is not a burden to hide, but a sign of our deep love and belonging to the living Earth.
In the Netherlands, many of us have been shaped by her teachings, her writing, and her presence, even from afar. We remember her voice, her luminous presence, and her poetic wisdom, rooted in Dharma and in Rilke’s verse. We carry her legacy forward, not as a task, but as a deep joy and responsibility.
May her transition be peaceful and her memory be a blessing.
May you and all who grieve her be held in compassion and peace. With loving-kindness and gratitude,
on behalf of the Buddhist Union of the Netherlands,Jonne Vink (Zen Peacemakers)

Through losing one beloved mentor in 2011, i found a copy of “Coming Back to Life”, and thus gained a lifelong mentor and inspiration for my practice as an earthkeeper and Buddhist.
Working through the grief of my beloveds’ murder was a tremendous challenge.
Through Joanna’s words I found compassion for the one who took my dear friends’ life while many in our community faltered in the practice.
I have since guided many to this work and found great joy to have danced and led the Elm Dance in many locations.
Forever grateful for such a timely reconnection to the divine, I deeply bow to this work that reconnects us All.May all beings be happy, may all beings be Free.

POEM TO JOANNA
Transient sentient being,
Spirit in a body to speak love,
Powerful to sing the pain of our souls,
Souls bearing the weight of knowing,
Knowing we are unravelling
This magnificent Web of Life
Joanna, I bow in Gratitude,
For you placed a thread in my hand
So I can weave it back again
Into the dancing Whole,
This vibrant, miraculous, generous World;
And to believe.

In Gratitude, Truth, Love and Active Hope, Joanna Tomkins -
I never met Joanna Macy, yet listening to her words felt like meeting someone I had known all my life. She felt like a missing link in my wisdom lineage, a spiritual guide for the movement to heal our relationship with the planet and with ourselves.
From her, I learnt:
• I might not save the world, but I can learn to love it.
• Stepping into the portal of my grief can unlock a deep caring and love for life itself.
• Remaining faithful to something matters more than staying hopeful for an outcome.
• I don’t need to do everything; doing what I love is enough.
• Believing and accepting that anything can happen can free my creativity and courage.Thank you for your being, relating and doing.
-
What a beautiful life well-lived and I thank you for sharing it with all of us. Thank you for your encouragement to always begin by recognizing our grief and shedding tears. Deep bows and infinite Metta to you, dear Joanna.

Joanna was a living incarnation of a true bodhisattva. An exceptionally brilliant mind, a toothy light-up the room smile, and a humility and determination of an unceasing seeker. She is an embodiment of that ‘active hope’, a practice she was placed on Earth to perpetuate at this pivotal point in time. She indeed will be rewarded with a swift and gentle transition… and her warrior spirit will carry on.

Sunday morning, sitting at Lake Alpine in my beloved Sierras pondering my relationship with Joanna after reading she took her last breath at 3:56pm the day before, this poem came through like water. thank you, Joanna, for all you gave, shared and taught me.🙏🏽♥️🕊️
FOR JOANNA
as i stood amidst
the Tamarack Pines and White
Fir rememberingyou while brushing my
hair under the friendly light of
the mountain sunrise,i sent a little
prayer for your next journey
as your soul departsthis Earthly realm. you
gave so very much, more than
most will ever know, with a kindness and
generosity i can
only aspire toin these trying times.
and, although i’d hoped to smile
with you again inour shared love and grief
for this most generous world,
i feel your spiritdispersing through the
breeze singing in the trees and
the silky pollendancing down to the
sturdy Earth, invisibly
weaving through the stardust which abides in
every fiber of each
small, fragile thread inthis vast Universe
in a shower of joyous
reassurance thateverything is as
it is meant to be, even
the unshakabletruth that we could have
done so much more, so much less,
than we did and theway through this time of
birthing is to live as if
it were our last day.-
Incredibly beautiful words, AyreAnna. A perfect sentiment for this time. Thank you so much for sharing.

I was privileged to meet Joanna at Spirit Rock Meditation Center. She was a true light in the world, and her work will carry on through all of those whose lives she touched. Many deep bows of gratitude and appreciation for her teaching and her presence.

May the Earth bless you and keep you.
May the Earth make her light to shine upon you,
and be gracious unto you.
May the Earth lift up her countenance upon you,
and give you her peace.Blessings for your wonderful life Joanna

Thank you for publishing the many resources of Joanna’s in this page. I appreciate that. Her passing has touched me deeply. It has reminded me of my own parents’ passings, years ago. I wished they’d have lived as long as Joanna did. I am not very familiar with her work, but I feel inspired to become familiar with it, now. I saw her only once, in person, at Jennifer Berezan’s concert ritual, “Praises for the World,” where many luminaries gave presentations, including Joanna. I have been following her journey on Caring Bridge with much appreciation for her family and friends, sharing what they have there. Rest in peace. You did great work, Joanna.
-
What a joy to have known of you, and to have been in the light of your amazing being. Onwards, yes?

Dear Joanna, Thank you for embodying so luminously the teachings you shared with us.
I hold you in heart as you journey on.

Thank you Joanna for opening a whole new world of deep ecology to me. The 10 day intensive I had the privilege of attending with you in 2016 changed my life.
Thinking of Joanna’s long life & all she gave to the world, I’m reminded of the words of George Bernard Shaw:
“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being thoroughly worn out before you are thrown on the scrap heap; the being a force of Nature instead of a feverish selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.
I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the community, and as long as I live, it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live.
Life is no ‘brief candle’ to me. It ia a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for a moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to the future generations.”Joanna was indeed a force of Nature who has handed the torch on to future generations.
Let us continue her work…May you rejoice now in Eternal Love 💕

Good bye dear Joanna
You taught during the “Work That Reconnects” — to love the earth, right here, right now and that is enough. I did and I do. My heart is very full for all sentient beings of this world. So grateful for your rich legacy. Films, books, podcasts captured you voice, your wisdom and the essential love in your heart. -
Dear Joanna, It was my great privilege to meet you and Fran in 2008 and to interview you in my living room for the Findhorn-based documentary, The Turning Point: A Return to Community. You were already one of my heroes, so hosting you and the delightful Fran for brunch with my husband David was one of the high points of my/our entire time living in Findhorn (now 19 years). Your good grace and humour, your deep wisdom combined with deep humility, your soulful groundedness, were and remain an inspiration. Having participated in a Work That Reconnects workshop some years before meeting you, and having woven some of your Coming Back to Life group exercises into group work that I have facilitated, I just want to say a deep THANK YOU for everything you have brought to our cherished planet. You were one of a kind and will be deeply missed.
-
Ah what a blessing to have had in our lives for so many years. Your work was magical, as I type this I have full body chills. I think you are watching over me right now. I think my most favorite was the Deep Ecology retreats we did 2 year in the early 90’s. Some very influential people evolved out of those gatehrings.
I know you are in pure love now, with Fran and all your ancestors who came to welcome you. I love you always and hope to see your essence in some form someday. I love you always dear Joanna. -
That is one wild precious life beautifully lived! Joanna, you have taught us how to live, how to give our gifts and how to die well. Immense gratitude and love for all who you are and what you have left us with. I will continue to explore what it means to converse with the earth.
-
Dear Joanna, your work was a game changer for me, especially “Active Hope”, which I have recommended to countless people on my journey as an environmental activist. I went from despair, wondering how on earth we could cope with the mess we were in, to rolling up my sleeves and getting on with helping to run a Transition Group in our town. 15 years later I’m still very involved and we have done so great stuff. I will never forget when we did “harvesting the gifts of the ancestors”, most people were in tears during or at the end of that guided meditation – it’s one of the most profound things we have ever done. Thank you for your patience, your guidance, your wisdom, your love -and for caring so deeply for our glorious planet.
-
Joanna Macy was the first person to show me that my pain for the world is healthy and important. Since my first meeting with her in 2003, I have been facilitating WTR. My gratitude and love for her are endless.
We will hold a memorial service in Munich on August 9th and online for the German-speaking area on August 6th.
-
It is difficult to leave a short message, or even a long message that would contain what Joanna meant to me. So instead, I will share an idea that encompasses a portion of it. It comes in the form of a Joanna Macy #passiton campaign:
The future will look back and call you heroes. Leadership. Pass it on.
If anyone knows the team at The Foundation for a Better Life, let’s share Joanna’s work with them.
(Of course, one could use Inspiration instead of Leadership. Indeed, Joanna embodied so many excellent qualities we could debate the choice for days.)
I’m grateful Joanna lived and died surrounded by her family and those closest to her and I am deeply comforted by this community and all those who spread her wisdom.
-
Your legacy and contribution to this terrain will live on in widening circles 🤍
Thank you, Joanna, for your guidance, sacrifices, devotion, and return to what’s real over and over. Your life has been full of incarnations and I will forever carry your teachings forward.
Undoubtedly—you are the sky, the trees, the feathers of the Great Eagle. Fly free.

Dear friends: Through Spirit Rock in Northern California,
I led a guided meditation based on Joanna’s work (https://dharmaseed.org/talks/91717/) and gave a talk honoring her life and work (https://dharmaseed.org/talks/91718/).
I first met Joanna in 1977 at Naropa Institute, and got to know her well when I moved to Berkeley in 1988, and helped initiate a neighborhood morning meditation group with ten households, one of them being the household of Joanna and Fran! I trained in her work in 1991, and since then have led workshops in the Work That Reconnects as well as incorporated her teachings and practices into my own teaching, sometimes taught with Joanna, and many times shared dinners! Blessings everyone, holding Joanna in my/our being and in our hearts, Donald

Joanna, The Time Is Nigh–now or never for us to reconnect. understand, feel the Life and Reality of our existence. And now you will be watching from a different view to see what happens. Will Life win? Or will Death prevail? I was blessed to meet you and your work at the Deep Ecology conferences on Whidbey Island. Thank you so much for your deep and immense work. May all these blessings scatter across the planet now. And seeing this so … be blessed.

Grief
By Ana Carolina AllenEnters our days through the refined eternal suffused light of the pure sun-
Carried by the cool clarity of the farthest distant stars over a sea-
Surrounded by the morning bird song of messengers, angels and the guides of All our ancestors,
Who like ancient trees are rooted, intertwined in earth, in the waters of love, the vastness of sky….
It is the eternal transpiration of life to spirit and spirit in life
The boat quietly without paddle sets sail. Onward now- the ripples quietly reverberating to sorrow,
And The mourners
song that seems everywhere echoing -

She embodied Sumak Kawsay – harmony with self, nature, others, and the Master of Life.

Joanna’s powerful insights and embodied teachings expanded our collective awareness profoundly; her work has (consciously and unconsciously) been essential ground for so many of us over the decades.
Deep gratitude, dear Joanna, for your great presence and boundless contributions to our lives and times, and for the earth.

Joanna Macy: A Beacon of Hope in an Age of Uncertainty
Joanna Macy passed away on July 19 at age 96 of complications after a fall, leaving behind a luminous legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come.
As an extraordinary teacher, writer, and activist, her work bridged the worlds of ecology, justice, peace, and spiritual insight with a rare depth of clarity and compassion.
As a Muslim environmental philosopher, I learned much from Joanna Macy’s life and teachings.
Her Buddhist-inspired worldview, grounded in mindfulness, interdependence, and love for all beings, deeply resonated with my understanding of the Islamic call to be stewards (khalifah) of the Earth. Her presence was radiant, her spirit generous, and her message ever-timely in an era shadowed by despair and disconnection.
When I invited her to speak to my class, she kindly recommended one of her videos.
It was not a live lecture, but it carried her full presence—calm, clear, and empowering.
Her words found fertile ground in the hearts of my students. To deepen our dialogue, I paired her ideas with Rumi’s poetry.
This unexpected pairing—Joanna Macy and Rumi—opened new doors for the students. It transformed not only how they saw the natural world but how they understood themselves within it.
Joanna Macy’s concept of “active hope” was compelling. It is not a naïve optimism, but a courageous commitment to act, even when the outcome is uncertain. In our post-truth era—cynicism, confusion, and disinformation often dominate public discourse—her vision of active hope shines like a beacon. She reminded us that despair is not the end, but a gateway to deeper awakening. That grief for the Earth is not weakness, but a sign of profound love. That transformation begins not in grand gestures, but in choosing to show up—fully awake, fully human, fully alive.
Joanna Macy may have left this world, but her spirit lives on in classrooms, communities, and circles of activists around the globe. Her teachings remind us that we are not alone and that even in the darkest hour, we are part of a vast, living web of life—capable of healing and change.
Rest in peace, dear Joanna. You were, and remain, a voice of wisdom and compassion in a world that still longs for both.Ibrahim Ozdemir

Thank you Joanna for reconnecting me with my fervent desire to contribute to preparing the way for the Future Ones to be born into a healthy, harmonious, joyful Gaïa. I will tell their story, to support and encourage the Guardians of the Elements who are already participating in this regeneration.
-
Dearest Joanna, though I never had the privilege of meeting you, in recent years you became one of the most important figures and mentors in my life. I hold such gratitude for the life you led, and for the gifts you have left me and so many others. I will hold you in my heart and soul, as you journey onward, and as we continue the urgent, actively hopeful and heart-centered work you so lovingly dedicated your life to.

I remember meeting Joanna at one of her Council of All Beings in the 90’s in Portland, OR, and then a bit later I spent a week with her and Fran at a Deep Ecology Institute on Whidbey Island while working on a doctoral dissertation focused on Ecopsychology. She definitely left an impact on my mind and heart with her writings, and deeply grounded ideas. Journey on Shambhala Warrior!
-
She also came to Olympia, WA around 2012. At one of her workshops, she asked me to share a story that connected to her Shambhala warrior story. She showed us the path. There is work to do. In gratitude, Joanna, for all you have done.

I have never met you in person but you have taught me through your books. The depth and gentleness of your words and the hope you gave to all; the love and connection you have for our Earth Home as well as the Universe and shared has given me direction. While you may be physically moved on, your spirit and love will keep the path open for us. Thank you with love.

In response to Joanna‘s love of the Earth, I want to share this extension to the loving kindness practice, which blesses all beings.
May Earth be safe from inner and outer danger.
May her consciousness be clear and peaceful.
May her structures be sturdy and healthy.
May she maintain and develop herself easily.
May she come to the end of suffering.
May her good remain and grow greater.
May we choose wisely
For Earth’s future depends upon our choices..

I first connected with Joanna’s work in 1989, when a group of us who had been working to save the South East Forests of NSW- Australia, camped together in a beautiful Forest reserve, to follow the Council of All Beings, from Joanna & John Seeds book : Thinking Like a Mountain. It was after a huge weekend of Protests, peaceful Arrests, and joyful Forest Camp at Reedy Creek.
The process we followed that weekend brought us into a space, to truly understand and empower the depth of importance that the work we were doing, was of greater significance than Political, but deep spirit of Ecological Connection for all of the creatures, animals, plants, birds, ecosystems – All of Nature, and how completely we were connected with it, and each other. This connection and knowledge has stayed with me to this day, and every day.
I have deep gratitude for Joanna & John’s work (and all Eco Warriors), for sharing their spirit, knowledge, journey and connection.
PS. This area is now Protected forever, as the Great South East Forest National Park. -
Through The Work That Reconnects, Joanna Macy touched my heart and transformed my understanding of what it means to be alive in this time of crisis and possibility. As a Buddhist, I bow to her fierce compassion, for the Earth, for justice, and for all beings. I am humbled by the privilege of having been able to receive her teachings via some great teachers, and I carry a deep responsibility to pass them on, especially to the generations after me. Her words and practices remain a living bridge between grief and action, between the world as it is and the world as it could be. Thank you Joanna 💚
-
Joanna’s body of work, global network of colleagues and teachings leave a huge legacy of compassion and a map for heart-centred change. I am so grateful for the opportunity to receive and share her teachings. May her work and vision live on and multiply through our efforts.

I am Yoo Jung-gil, director of the Korean Buddhist Life Ecological Solidarity Movement.
When I translated her book Rejuvenated and held a publishing ceremony in 2020, she sent me a congratulatory message and had a conversation over Zoom.
Since then, the ‘Work that reconnects’ has been conducted dozens of times in various versions and various targets in combination with the traditional Zen practice of Korean Buddhism.
As a Buddhist teacher, her words of enlightenment, practice, and practice for a transition society that reconnects a divided society, gave many people a clear vision and hope for a civilized transition.
Thank you very much, Joanna Macy. I wish you all the best -

A beautiful being to have walked on this earth and left a trail of love, compassion, and action in her wake. The retreat that she led with grace and peace, and the interactions I had with her, will stay in my memory and my heart.
-
I’m so grateful to Joanna Macy for having shared her vision of Nuclear Guardianship, which revived the commitment I had felt as a teenager to take responsibility for the toxins we create. I had given up, though, tired of all the criticism and judgement that implied I was a fanatical party-pooper. I resolved to deal with my own personal stuff as the only terrain where I could change things. And now I feel empowered to do something externally also, and at all levels, meeting other people inspired by Joanna’s vision. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
-
A great, great soul and spiritual pioneer has passed. Such learning in places unlit and unexplored. I’m thinking of her presentation in Boise, Idaho, an unlikely place perhaps 10 years ago. We were soaked in something rare yet Joanna was utterly approachable and, of course, herself. I found four of her books in my library, which would of course excluded the many I have given away. I first met Fran and Joanna in 1970 or 71 when Fran was a regional director of the Peace Corps. I stayed at their house in Cleveland Park a time or two. Pride in this association may not be the most noble of virtues but it led me into her wisdom and a wider wisdom.
I was led to check on Joanna from running into her work as used by Christin Vaters Paintner in Galway. That Joanna would be there was not surprising as she became close to a universal spiritual leader, accessible to all. -
This is a beautifully written and deeply moving tribute. Honoring Joanna Macy’s life and work in “Joanna Macy In Memoriam” captures both her profound wisdom and her extraordinary dedication to the interconnectedness of all life. The reflection conveys her enduring impact with grace, reverence, and heartfelt warmth, allowing readers to feel both the depth of her teachings and the personal inspiration she provided. Thank you for sharing such a tender, insightful, and uplifting homage that celebrates a life that truly transformed the way we see and engage with the world.
