To move through the Great Turning, we need symbols, images, songs and art that bring us into reconnection and stir us on a deeper level. Carlotta Cataldi, an artist in our community, created these graphics to serve that purpose, bringing the concepts of the Work to life, and making them easier to understand and share.
The inspiration for this project grew out of a vision quest, and Carlotta is offering these evocative graphics as a gift for use by our network of Facilitator Members. In this blog post, Carlotta shares her journey to the Work That Reconnects, her path as a graphic artist, and the powerful dream with Joanna Macy which led to this project.

The Spiral
The Work That Reconnects leads participants through a Spiral of four stages, each flowing naturally into the next. Every round changes us, so we return to Gratitude with a fresh perspective.
The Spiral begins with Coming from Gratitude, inviting us to notice what we’re thankful for. This quiets the mind, offers grounding and helps loosen feelings of inadequacy, so we can enter the next phase more fully present.
In Honoring Our Pain for the World, we feel our grief and discover compassion’s true meaning: to suffer with. What once isolated us expands our sense of interconnection – opening us to deeper love, courage, imagination, and justice.
Seeing with New and Ancient Eyes arises from a recognition of our inter-existence. We feel our kinship with all beings, grasp the unity of social and environmental justice, and glimpse our power to act across generations.
Going Forth invites us to act according to our gifts and context. We move with others, learn from each step, and trust that action brings clarity and new opportunities.
Three Stories of Our Time
Each of the Three Stories reveals a profoundly different lens through which we can understand our world.
Business as Usual is the story of the Industrial Growth Society and Modernity, and the European-based colonial empires from which it emerged. The central plot of the story is competition, and it functions to maintain the power and privilege of the wealthy.
The Great Unraveling refers to the ongoing and worldwide unraveling of biological, ecological, economic, and social systems. It is the story told by scientists, journalists, and activists who have not been bought off or intimidated by the forces of the Industrial Growth Society.
The Great Turning is the story of the transition from the Industrial Growth Society to a Life Sustaining Society. The power of the Great Turning comes from our human efforts in 4 Dimensions:
