Karen ScottBeing in Nature

I have a background in activism, community development and facilitation and love to support people and communities to adapt and thrive in these turbulent times . I live in west Wales and run my own practice, named Being in Nature, offering nature-inspired coaching and facilitation services to support people who are troubled by the world. My website is www.beinginnature.net

Why I am called to facilitate the Work

When I first experienced the work in 2012 in a weekend spiral facilitated by Jenny McKewn, it contributed to a profound shift in my thinking and behaviour in relation to our living Earth. This coincided with my becoming involved in the Transition movement and TreeSisters and was a time of deepening my connection with the natural world and with groups that acted on behalf of thriving life on Earth.

This led to my joining the Facilitator Development Adventure training later that year and I felt called to share the benefits I experienced with others, in hope of inspiring and encouraging others to draw strength and nourishment form the Work to support us in these troubled times.

How I see the Work serving the Great Turning

I have written an article that describes 'what I love about being alive in these times' with specific reference to the WTR (published in Deep Times March 2020) and here is an extract that I think speaks to how I see the Work serving the Great Turning:

"I am learning to see and hold in my heart both the destruction and regeneration happening at the same time. I'm learning to remember that it's both/and, not either/or. I'm learning to embrace uncertainty.
Whether we're here to witness the death of all we love, or to co-create the new, or whether we are midwifing both ends of life at the same time, it seems that we need these same qualities:
-presence
-connection
-kindness
-compassion
-calm fortitude
-courage
-and above all, LOVE.

This is what I love:
I am learning to become
More fully human"

And I see the Work as being a major contributor to my seeing the world this way, able to old both the unravelling and the turning in my heart together, growing my capacity to love.

Audiences I work with

Communities, community and political activists, XR rebels, general public, public sector employees, women (TreeSisters), grieving people, dying people, others touched by death and dying.

Other relevant skills & experiences

I am an activist and have worked in community and third sector (not for profit) development for over 30 years, supporting the development of grass roots groups and projects, as well as non profit organisations. I have also developed volunteering and time banking programmes. This work has included organising and facilitating numerous events from committee meetings to delivering training sessions, to large scale conferences.

I have co-facilitated a Death Cafe in my local town for the last 5 years on a voluntary basis.

I stepped out of paid employment in April 2019 to focus on giving my time to Extinction Rebellion (XR) and other initiatives that contribute to the Great Turning. I am part of a national WTR working group that sits within XR and have facilitated around 20 workshops for rebels and other earth activists ans change-makers in the last year.

I have created a Work That Reconnects programme for civil servants in Welsh Government that I am running on a pro bono pilot basis, 8 workshops in all between Match and November 2020. I am evaluating this and will write a blog about it for the network and perhaps run a webinar too.

I run my own nature- based coaching and facilitation practice, named Being in Nature, and my website is www.beinginnature.net
