I discovered Joanna's work in the 1990s, with World as Lover, World as Self. My special interest is ecophilosophy and the role that spirituality and ethics can play in transforming our economic and social systems. Since spending 11 days with Joanna doing a WTR intensive, it has become an integral part of my thinking and practice. I offer WTR from a Buddhist and from a more secular point of view. I think it's imperative that we go beyond the meditation cushion, taking our compassion and wisdom out onto the street. These two approaches, Subtle Activism and Engaged Buddhism, are complementary aspects that reconnect us to our true nature, to one another, and to the Earth. I lead contemplative trails in the South African protected wilderness, and also offer WTR to groups large and small, basing the teaching on a foundation of meditation and compassion.
After working as a lawyer and environmental scientist I spent 10 years in Spain deeply immersed in Buddhist practices, returning to Cape Town as a nun. Since returning, in addition to teaching widely, I help direct the work of the Southern African Faith Communities Environmental Institute multi-faith NGO - SAFCEI.
