(English version below)

Towards a New Council of Beings?
Some Reflections on a Practice of Connection with the More-than-Human
By Amans Gaussel
One of the best-known practices – and also, I believe, one of the most widely and intimately connecting – of the Work that Reconnects (a deep ecology practice known in French as “Travail qui relie”) is to meet beings of nature, and to embody and live out their gathering in a council, in order to listen to what these “more-than-human” entities have to say to us in this time of great upheaval.
This practice has been called the Council of All Beings for over 40 years. It has been shared in many countries around the world — in schools, associations, communities, and activist networks. Generally, it is translated as “Conseil de tous les êtres” in my language.
I have experienced this kind of meeting in different formats, and as a facilitator, I have often initiated processes inspired by it – however I have shared the Council in its entirety only once: a three-day workshop devoted to the Council in Brocéliande in Brittany, France. The workshop was with Murmure des Forêts, and made possible with the unwavering support of Sonia Chevrel and many others.
Following the various feedback we received (from humans, of course, but not only :°)), it seemed useful to me to share with the WTR Network the insights that seemed significant concerning this process. Having learned that they sparked interest among other practitioners of this work, I set about writing this article (in French, thanks to translators!).
If I propose to name this contribution “Toward a New Council of Beings”, it’s because, perhaps, all this can lead to a questioning of the name of this process. Indeed, the only “Council of All Beings” that can exist, in my opinion, is the one that takes place endlessly within the Goddess.
As humans, I believe we can hardly ever achieve more than “Councils of Some Beings” – at least these days, even if we manage to gather a large assembly of the most enlightened among us. The hordes of tardigrades and the fields of lichens, the fish, the bacteria, the winds, the seeds, and the rhizomes: how could we possibly represent all of this?
Sure, we can try to open our hearts and souls to the whole planet, even the universe, but… in doing so, we may also fail, acting more like homo sapiens than a young and vibrant adventitious plant. We sapiens, even though we also have some Neanderthal genes, are so easily dominant… so the question of humility and pride confronts us when we go to listen to the councils of other beings. This is already the case, as presented in this ritual – so what is proposed here is only a slight adjustment of the existing: an iota.
Also, a “Council of Not Many Beings” wouldn’t be very appealing: with that, we wouldn’t attract many climate skeptics or business angels to our workshops. Thus, “Council of Beings” seems like a good compromise: it is both true – because no one would claim “not to be”, right? except maybe Shakespeare’s ghost – and sufficiently open for everyone to find their place, including an speciesist or radicals of all kinds.
Therefore, a next step, following this article, could be to undertake the drafting of a new “tool sheet,” a refreshed presentation of a Council of Beings, conscious of systemic oppressions, and to be distributed in future WTR manuals? For me, it seems like a somewhat heavy and not very urgent task – though perhaps significant. I am willing to support this writing from a distance, if it happens (for example, you can contact me via the blog www.lesuperflux.fr).
But by the way, what are the points I propose to raise?

Amans Gaussel grew up in the lands and suburbs of Paris before settling down in Bretagne, for permaculting with children and friends. His first profession was theater, then he became facilitator and shared trainings about collective intelligence. He’s also interested in mental health, poetry, gender studies… The both of them practice meditation, cooperative justice, emotional listening, and they offer services to associations and networks around there (collective places, food resilience, peace danses…) Deep ecology’s consciousnesses cross all their jobs and creations.
